The farm runs on people like you
Every walk, meal, vet ride and adoption at 12 Hills is handled by a volunteer. Give two shifts a month and you'll change dozens of lives a year.
Find a role that fits
Pick one, or try a few. Every role starts with a short orientation and a buddy shift.
Kennel crew
Feed, clean runs, wash bowls and bedding, and give every dog some one-on-one attention.
Driver
Pick up strays, take dogs to vet visits in Pender and Norfolk, and deliver them to fosters.
Adoption events
Bring dogs to weekend events in Sioux City and Norfolk, and talk with families about them.
Photographer and storyteller
Take portraits and write short profiles that help each dog get noticed online.
Fundraising and admin
Help with donor thank-yous, grant writing, the newsletter and our annual Barn Dance.
Shifts run every day of the year
Choose the times that suit you and book them yourself on our volunteer calendar. Holidays and snow days need the most help.

What you need
No experience with dogs required.
- Age 16 or older, or 12 to 15 with a parent on the same shift
- A 90-minute orientation, held every Saturday at 10 am
- Two shifts a month for at least three months
- Closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting muddy
- A signed waiver, which we'll send after you sign up

Bring your team, class or club
Workplaces, schools, churches and 4-H clubs volunteer with us for half-day projects: building dog beds, painting kennels, spreading mulch in the play yards or running a donation drive.
Groups of 5 to 15 work best. Book at least three weeks ahead.
