How a dog finds its way home

Every dog that comes up our gravel drive takes the same path. Some are through it in three weeks. Some need most of a year. We don't rush it.

    Rescue

    We take calls from animal control, rural neighbors and owners who can no longer keep their dogs. Each new arrival gets a vet check, vaccinations and a quiet kennel to settle into.

    Most dogs are with us within 48 hours of the first call.

    Rehabilitate

    Medical treatment, spay and neuter surgery, and time every day in the play yards with our volunteers. Fearful or reactive dogs work one-on-one with a volunteer trainer.

    Every dog spends at least two hours outdoors each day.

    Rehome

    We get to know each dog before we match it. You meet the dog here at the farm, bring your own dog along for an introduction, and can call us any time after the adoption.

    If an adoption doesn't work out, the dog always comes back to us.

Twelve hills and one gravel road

12 Hills began in 2014 with a single chain-link run behind a farmhouse on H Avenue. Walthill had no shelter, and dogs picked up on county roads had nowhere to go but a two-hour drive away.

Today the rescue covers eleven acres of the same land: two kennel barns, four fenced play yards, a medical room and a lot of grass. There's no paid staff. Every shift is covered by volunteers from Walthill, Pender, Macy and further afield.

The name comes from the view off the back fence. On a clear day you can count them.

Ways to help

You don't have to adopt to change a dog's life. Here's where you can help most.

  • Adopt

    Meet a dog at the farm and take them home. The adoption fee is $150 for adults and $225 for puppies, and covers vaccines, a microchip and spay or neuter surgery.

    Give a dog a few weeks away from kennel life. We cover food, supplies and every vet bill, and match you with a dog that suits your home.

  • Volunteer

    Walk dogs, clean runs, help at adoption events or drive dogs to vet visits in Norfolk and Sioux City. Shifts run every day of the year.

    We always need large-breed dry food, bleach, bath towels and heavy-duty chew toys. You can drop them off at the barn during visiting hours.

We drove up from Lincoln to meet a different dog. Copper walked over, leaned against my husband's legs and that was that. He's been swimming every weekend since.
